Midwife certification program purpose is to establish entry-level skills, abilities and knowledge that is necessary to practice competently. The certification program is established through education, supervised clinical experience and training that is followed by completion of the written examination.

First Step in the CM Certification

The first step in certification process is evaluation of the candidate’s clinical training and education according to standards that set by Portfolio Evaluation Process. All certification applicants must need to demonstrate competencies identified by NARM job analysis either through rote that is determined by the NARM or completion of Portfolio Evaluation Process. All applicants regardless of their education route, you must complete the 2nd step which is the written examination. It is important that the applicant is graduate of bachelor’s program and become RN in their jurisdiction or state. It also includes sitting for National Council Licensure Examination.

According to American College of Nurse-Midwives, majority of the practicing midwives hold graduate degrees from MAN schools. The fact is that 82% of the certified midwives hold master’s degree and there are 4.8% midwives who hold doctoral degrees. With this, ACNM advises applicants to enroll in graduated program that is accredited by Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education or ACME. Currently, there are 39 ACME accredited programs in US offering master’s degree, doctorate degrees and postgraduate certificates upon completion of the program. Typically, applicants can complete the program in 1 year.

Upon graduation, students can sit for American Midwifery Certification Board exam to become a certified midwife. The credential is valid for 5 years and there are 2 methods in renewing the CNM certifications:

Applying

To become a licensed midwife, applicants must be a graduate of master’s or doctorate program that is accredited by Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education. The programs have course pre-requisites like community health nursing and statistics.
